Is your heart older than you?

Heart disease (including heart attack and stroke) is still the leading cause of death amongst men. Lifestyle factors, like smoking or not getting enough exercise, mean many people have unhealthy hearts, which means their 'heart age' is older than their physical age.

Around 12,700 people will die from a heart attack or stroke throughout September alone, and many more are at high risk. The Heart Age Test has already identified 167,000 people who have a heart age older than their chronological age by at least 10 years (figures from BHF).

To increase awareness about heart health and reduce their risk of heart attack and stroke, Public Health England (PHE) is urging adults to take three minutes out of their day to take the Heart Age Test.

The Heart Age Test is being re-launched as part of the One You Adult Health programme to mark the start of PHE's Healthy Heart campaign, which will run throughout September in partnership with leading heart charities.

Having a heart age older than your chronological age means that you are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke sooner than normal. One in ten men aged 50 (11%) are living with a heart age that is ten years older than they are, according to new analysis of the 1.3 million people who have already used the Heart Age Test.

The Test offers an online assessment for anyone over 30 which allows a person to input basic physical and lifestyle-related information, and provides an immediate estimation of their 'heart age'. It will prompt people who may look outwardly healthy to think about the health of their inner organs as well.

For the first time the Heart Age Test will direct people who do not know their blood pressure numbers to a nearby testing station where they can get a free check. People having their blood pressure checked will also be encouraged to take action if it is too high. Around 5 million people in England are living with undiagnosed high blood pressure.
